  6. A fuller "readme" file will be available from
  7. the StartMenu following successful installation.

  9. Known problems/issues with this release:

  12. GENERAL ISSUES
  13.  
  14. This program requires DirectX 6 or above;
  15. DirectX 6 is provided on the CD.
  16.  
  17. If you have any graphical problems, ensure that
  18. you are using the latest drivers for your card,
  19. especially for "S3" and "ATI" models.
  20.  
  21. If you encounter any compatibility problems other
  22. than those listed below, please fill out the form
  23. provided in "feedback.txt" (on the CD) and send it
  24. to us.

  27. COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
  28.  
  29. The program has no major compatibility problems that
  30. we know of (at least, not on "typical" machines) but
  31. the following issues should be noted.
  32.  
  33. ..Graphical
  34.  
  35. You may experience some problems with the Matrox
  36. Millennium 2. If huge "holes" appear in the terrain
  37. with this card, try switching the Texture Detail
  38. to HIGH (under Options/Video Options/Performance)!
  39.  
  40. This version will not display certain special effects
  41. (e.g. explosions and weapon trails) on cards which do
  42. not support additive alpha effects. Alternative effects
  43. for cards of this type will be made available in the
  44. final version.
  45.  
  46. You may also have problems running in 32-bit modes
  47. on TNT cards (and cards which use the TNT chipset).
  48. If the front-end is visible but the game-world seems
  49. blank, try putting Windows into a 16-bit mode before
  50. running the program. This appears to be a driver-
  51. related problem, which we hope to solve shortly.
  52.  
  53. The program may fail when attempting to run with 3DFX
  54. Voodoo1 cards under our D3D renderer. This appears
  55. to be another driver problem, but it is easily avoided
  56. by only running 3DFX cards under the Glide renderer,
  57. which has better performance in any case.

  59. Some users have reported problems when running in a
  60. window on motherboard-mounted ATI Rage Pro Turbo
  61. (4 Meg) cards. We hope to investigate this further,
  62. but suspect that it is also a driver problem.

  64. ..Aural
  65.  
  66. Some users have reported a possible conflict
  67. between Voodoo2 graphics cards, SBLive audio cards
  68. and Windows98. This appears to be a fairly rare problem
  69. but, if performance is very poor when using SBLive
  70. sound, just select software audio instead.

  72. ..General
  73.  
  74. Finally, this demo will not work on machines which
  75. use some of the older Cyrix processors (which do not
  76. support the RDTSC instruction). We hope to rectify
  77. this problem in the final version.

  80. PERFORMANCE ISSUES
  81.  
  82. Performance may be unsatisfactory on some poorly
  83. specified 3d cards. If this is the case, try
  84. selecting a lower screen resolution. Be sure to use
  85. a 16-bit screen mode if you can, and set the Texture
  86. Detail to LOW. If performance remains poor, try
  87. running the "Hardware Detect" program and selecting
  88. our Software Render --- this may actually be faster
  89. than some 3d cards!
